HOW IT ALL BEGAN – 1996:

I began blogging in the fall of 1996, when I was a 17-year-old college student.

The word “blog” was not yet commonly used, and most people had never considered the possibility of earning a living from a website. The first site I created was about college life because it was where I was at that time in my life.

The site began attracting students from my campus and eventually became popular on other college campuses through word of mouth. I added affiliate links for college essentials, dorm-room décor and other products I thought college students would appreciate.

Before long, my little college website was earning enough to cover more than an occasional pizza with friends. It had become a real business. 😄

About - Sherry Bennett

That early experience taught me one of the most important lessons of my career:
A website succeeds when it serves a clearly defined audience and gives people a reason to return.

BUILDING MY FIRST COLLECTION OF WEBSITES:

Encouraged by the success of my college site, I began creating websites in other niches.

Because I had grown up with a dog and two cats, the pet niche was a natural next step. I created one site focused primarily on dogs and another focused on cats.

I designed the sites to work together, allowing visitors to move easily between the related content.

This was during the earliest era of online publishing, when search engines, affiliate programs and website-building practices were still developing. Much of what worked then would need to be approached differently today, but those early projects gave me invaluable hands-on experience in audience development, website structure, content creation and cross-promotion.

I continued expanding into additional niches, testing different content and monetization strategies as I moved ahead. Some projects performed modestly. Others grew into highly profitable businesses. Each new site taught me something.

BECOMING A FULL-TIME pROFESSIONAL BLOGGER:

By 1998, managing my growing collection of websites while keeping up with my college studies had become increasingly difficult.

In January 1999, I made the decision to leave college and devote myself to blogging full time. My parents strongly opposed my decision, so I knew I would have to work hard to prove that building affiliate websites could become a legitimate career.

For the first few years, I worked anywhere from 12 to 18 hours a day creating new content, creating new sites, promoting my sites and learning everything I could about online publishing and affiliate marketing.

In the year 2000 I reached the first of many goals I had set for myself. That was the year I earned my first six-figure annual income.

That milestone confirmed that blogging was not simply a temporary side hustle. It could definitely become a substantial and sustainable business.

Over the years that followed, I launched many more websites, sold some of them along the way, while continuing to grow others. Together, those businesses have generated several million dollars in revenue and allowed me to build the kind of career that barely seemed possible when I published my first college website in 1996.

FROM BUILDING BLOGS TO TEACHING BLOGGERS:

After spending decades building my own online businesses, I decided it was time to share my knowledge and began teaching other people what I have learned.

In 2021, I created Blogging Step-by-Step to give aspiring bloggers a clear path through the often intimidating and confusing process of starting a blog. The course has since reached more than 25,000 students.

In 2025 I created the course Build a Blog Empire for bloggers who are ready to take their blogging to the next level and embrace the strategies for building and scaling a highly profitable blogging empire.

My teaching is based on practical experience rather than theory. I understand what it means to begin with a simple idea, publish without an established audience, experiment with strategies that don’t necessarily work the way you had hoped, recover from your trial and error experiments and gradually turn websites into valuable business assets.

WHY I CREATED THEBLOGGINGQUEEN.COM:

I created TheBloggingQueen.com to share honest, experience-based guidance for beginner and intermediate level bloggers.

Blogging has changed tremendously since I began in 1996. Technology has improved and is easier to use, but the amount of conflicting and misleading information has made it increasingly difficult for beginners to know whom to trust, where to begin and how to proceed.

My goal is to help bloggers understand not only what to do, but why it matters.

On this site, I write about subjects that have played a meaningful role in my own career, including:

  • How to start and structure a blog
  • Choosing a profitable direction
  • Creating useful content
  • Growing an audience
  • Affiliate marketing
  • Search traffic and website promotion
  • Developing a long-term blogging business
  • Avoiding common and costly blogging mistakes

Blogging is not a get-rich-quick opportunity. Building a successful blog requires time, patience, good judgment and consistent work. My purpose is to help bloggers use their time and focus their efforts more wisely.

MY APPROACH TO BLOGGING ADVICE:

The lessons I share come from nearly three decades of building and operating successful websites.

When I recommend a strategy, I explain the reasoning behind it whenever possible, and draw from my own results and experiences. I also recognize that blogging is continually evolving. A technique that worked in 1996, 2006 or even 2 years ago may need to be adapted for the current online environment.

My commitment is to provide practical, thoughtful information that respects both the reader’s time and the realities of building a successful online business.

I will never tell you that blogging is effortless. I will show you how to approach it with greater clarity, stronger foundations and more realistic expectations.
