Writing Your About Page

How to Write Your About Page

WRITING THE BEST ABOUT ME PAGE:

Learning how to write an About Me page is an important part of creating your blog. New visitors will often venture to your “about me” page shortly after they arrive. They have discovered your site.. and have read one of your posts.. or maybe a couple.. and now they would like to know a little more about the person who is sharing this information.

Who are you? How long have you been doing this? How did you get started? How did you become so knowledgeable about all of this?

Reading the About page is almost like meeting someone for the first time.. so making a good impression from the beginning is important. This allows your readers to get to know you and like you.

When your readers like you and like what you are doing.. they will want to explore more of your website content. Many visitors will return again and again to see what new posts you have added.

A great “about me”, “about us” or simply “about” page will give visitors a good idea about who you are and why your blog could be a great fit for them.

Consider this page to be an extension of who you are. This page allows readers to learn more about you and the compelling story of how you became a blogger.. and what it was that inspired you to create the blog they are currently enjoying.

It is unfortunate that so many websites have an about page that is mediocre at best.

Many are unfortunately robotic-sounding rather than letting the author’s personality show through. Still others are riddled with poor grammar and bad spelling.. stuffed with irrelevant or confusing information, or just generally not interesting enough to make anyone want to stick around and read more.

If you don’t have a well-written, informative about me page.. this is a missed opportunity to connect with your visitors.. thus encouraging them to become regular readers of your blog.

Some bloggers simply don’t realize the best way to craft an about page or the reasons for creating one in the first place. Let’s take a closer look at why an effective About Us page is so important:

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE – HOW TO WRITE AN ABOUT ME PAGE:

The best about pages are neither too long nor too short. These pages can vary in content and format.. but there are several key factors every good about page should have.

Before you begin, consider what you might want to include. Perhaps jot down a few notes or make an outline.

Do you want to include your background and professional accomplishments? What can you offer your readers that they might appreciate?

In addition to learning more about you.. your visitors will also want to know what the purpose of your blog is.. and what kind of information they can expect to find.

Once you have decided what to include.. you’re ready to get started.

STEP ONE:
Greet your readers.. introduce yourself and tell the story of who you are and what you’re about. Make sure you’re using a friendly tone.

Don’t ramble on and on.. they aren’t interested in your entire life history. Just include a few relevant facts.. explaining how and when you got started and how you have grown from being just another blogger to someone who has acquired a lot of expertise in your particular niche.

Explain what’s behind your drive and passion, including any qualifications and relevant experiences that make you an authority on the topic.

Perhaps include a funny story or something else to endear yourself and your brand to your readers. Do this well and you will easily connect with visitors and make them want to learn more about you and what you have to share on your blog.

STEP TWO:
After a few introductory paragraphs.. you can focus more on what you do and the reasons why you love doing what you do.

It is also important to convey to your readers what they can expect to find on your blog and what they stand to gain by becoming a follower. If they don’t feel any kind of connection with you or your blog.. there is nothing to make them want to explore your blog further and learn more.

That would mean possibly losing them to the competition! So.. explain what sets you and your blog apart from the others and make the benefits you have to offer crystal clear.

STEP THREE:
Wrap up by sharing what’s next for you and your business. Do you have expansion plans of perhaps beginning a weekly podcast, webinars, etc.? Be sure to add some images as well as links to a couple of your blog posts that you think they might enjoy for starters.

TOP TIPS FOR AN ENGAGING ABOUT ME PAGE:

The best about page is one that explains who you are.. what you have to offer and why visitors should explore more of your website. Every About page is different.. but the following tips should be useful regardless of what type of website or blog you have.

1) A HEADLINE THAT PACKS A PUNCH:

Begin with a strong headline to make readers want to explore more of the website. This might be your only chance to build trust with your reader.. share your mission and tell your story.

A good headline should be 5 to 10 words long. Keeping it concise means not losing your visitors’ attention. Clearly explain what they’re going to find on the blog and use the right keywords to describe the content so readers know what they can expect.

2) PHOTOS ON YOUR ABOUT ME PAGE OR IN THE HEADER:

A photo of yourself is optional but it is definitely something you should consider adding to your about page. A photo of yourself smiling and looking friendly and approachable can encourage readers to have positive feelings about you and want to read more.

If you are someone who blogs about parenting and family you might want to include a current picture of your family.

If you blog about adventure and the outdoors.. you might want to include a few pictures of yourself and your family hiking, rafting, horseback riding, etc.

3) ENGAGING VISUALS:

A great story is mainly about the way it’s told.. but business owners and bloggers have more tools at their fingertips today than ever before. Feel free to add an infographic or a video to help tell the story of your brand.. keeping your readers eager to learn more.

Not only do visuals help you explain more complicated processes or concepts.. but they are also a great tool for building that all-important rapport with your audience and establishing a connection.

Only use images which are an accurate reflection of yourself and your business. Visitors’ eyes are naturally drawn to photos so always use the best quality.

Think about what you want to show them.. are you a fashion blogger.. showing off your sense of style? Are you a travel blogger sharing the wonderful places you have visited?

Whatever message you want to convey.. make sure your chosen photos reflect it. Also, be sure not to let your About page or the photos become outdated. Update things as you pursue new interests or as your life changes. That way readers will always know who you are, what you’re all about, and that you care about the website or blog you have created.

4) RELEVANT STATISTICS AND FACTS:

Add interesting statistics and facts to boost your credibility with visitors. Examples might include how long you’ve been in business or how long you have been blogging. Share how your business has grown and evolved.. any awards you have received.. and any unique selling points or features your business or blog offers.

5) USE YOUR OWN VOICE:

Sharing personal information can add context as well as credibility and help visitors form a better understanding of you, your business and your blog.

A relatable, natural voice is important here, so try to write as you speak and minimize your use of complicated sentences and technical jargon. Visitors prefer to read something with personality injected into it so they know there is a real person behind the blog or website.

It’s important to keep your text informative and interesting. Keep your sentences and paragraphs relatively short.. and try to achieve a balance between being thorough and being concise.. to make the text as reader-friendly as you can.

Avoid long-winded sentences, long paragraphs and going off on unrelated tangents. The last things you want to do are alienate, confuse, or bore your visitors.

6) HONESTY AND TRANSPARENCY:

Visitors expect you to be honest and transparent about who you are and what you are offering them. This is crucial if you want to earn their trust. Being completely transparent can greatly impact your clicks, sales and bottom line.

7) SOCIAL MEDIA AND CALLS TO ACTION:

Pretty much all successful blogs and websites these days offer links to social media. This not only helps create a stronger online presence but also boosts traffic to all your channels.. not just the website itself.

Choose from a widget or plugin, or manually insert the icon HTML code.. depending on your theme and which works best on your website. Always test icons, buttons and links to make sure they are working. Then enjoy the boost in traffic your social media channels are getting.

A call to action might be something visitors can click to follow you on social media, check out a specific post, or sign up for your blog’s newsletter. A great way to increase website traffic.. calls to action engage visitors with your content and are always worthwhile having in place.

8) TESTIMONIALS AND REVIEWS:

Another great way to add credibility to your website and encourage visitors to trust you is to include reviews from happy customers. Testimonials from past customers help you to attract new ones. If you have quite a few to choose from.. ensure you pick a couple of testimonials which are relevant to your goal audience and which show your business in the best possible light.

    IN CONCLUSION:

Every website deserves an excellent about me page. It helps visitors learn more about you and the reason you have your website or blog. An about page is a handy tool you can use to attract visitors and establish trust.

The above tips will hopefully help you get started writing a new about page or updating your current one so that it appeals to readers and makes them want to explore your website further.

There’s nothing difficult about writing an about page.. even if you don’t consider writing to be one of your strong points. The key is to come across as authentic and interesting as you can.

To recap.. don’t be shy to share facts about yourself so the readers feel connected to you. That doesn’t mean sharing your deepest, darkest secrets.. just some interesting facts you can use to build a relationship with potential customers. Include references to your expertise too and let readers know what to expect from your website or blog.

Always be honest and transparent.. and write using your own “voice”.. injecting your personality wherever possible. If you create your About page keeping these tips in mind, you’re sure to end up with a winning page that will make visitors want to return and stay up to date with what’s new.

It will also encourage new readers to explore the rest of your site and find out more about you.. and/or your products and services.

Remember, a great website or blog starts with a great about me page!
